The United States monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
