Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the massive storm caused widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by strong flows.

Our team saved 14 individuals stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation this year.

Scientists have found that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration last week because of the severe damage caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
