Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
