Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such medications should be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication describe a intense return of cravings.
"It was like something activating and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is greater among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
