Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
